Das Humboldt-Forum ist ein sehr ideologisches und sehr konservatives Projekt. Es ist Teil der Kulturindustrie und muss vor allem eine touristische Funktion erfüllen.
Es ist völlig absurd, dass man in einen Preußischen Palast gehen muss, um eine ethnografische Sammlung zu sehen. Ich kann mir im 21. Jahrhundert nichts Fehlgeleiteteres vorstellen als das.

Es ist ein Beirat um die Intendanz gewählt worden, der Vertreter aus den verschiedenen Erdteilen umfasst, sodass wir hier ein durchaus permanentes Gesprächsforum haben werden, in dem wir das gesamte Material und darüber hinaus besprechen. Es hat sich allerdings dabei auch gezeigt, dass die antieuropäische Wendung, die sich mit dem Kolonialismus verbindet, in den ehemaligen Kolonialländern gar nicht wertgeschätzt wird, weil wir argumentieren, wir wollen nicht das zweite Mal rhetorisch zu Opfern werden. Das ist die zweite Seite, die mitdiskutiert werden muss in diesem Rahmen. Und die dritte, dass Berlin darin ein Sonderfall ist, dass es große Bereiche der Sammlung zusammengebracht hat, bevor Berlin, Deutschland kolonial wurde, und die Urbestände gehen auf Leibnitz zurück, der nun ein Ziel hatte, die Wertschätzung von anderen Kulturen, vor allem China zu fördern und von anderen Kulturen auch zu lernen.

Es geht immer darum, wie wir die Dinge verändern können. So kam auch die Idee mit dem Nelson-Mandela-Platz vor dem Humboldt-Forum. Ich habe es mir da nicht leicht gemacht. Kaum ist einer gestorben, schon kommt der Vorschlag. Normalerweise mache ich so was nicht. Aber es gibt da dieses große Problem in der Wahrnehmung des Humboldt-Forums: Da denken sowohl die Politiker als auch die Bevölkerung zunächst immer zuerst an das Schloss. Das würde noch verstärkt werden, wenn der Platz davor weiter nur Schlossplatz heißt. Der Charakter, den das Humboldt-Forum haben muss, wäre mit Nelson-Mandela-Platz unübertrefflich gut beschrieben. Und die Gefährdung mit dem kolonialen Denken wäre widerlegt. Auch auf das Humboldt-Forum hätte ein solcher Vorplatz großen Einfluss.

Das Konzept des Humboldt-Forums beabsichtigt die Überwindung einseitiger postkolonialer Vorstellungen, die die Museen in der Nachfolge des Kolonialismus ansiedeln und die nicht-europäische Welt nur als Opfer des Kolonialismus konstruieren und gerade so die koloniale Fragmentierung der Welt rekonstruieren.

Das British Museum ist ohne Zweifel ein Museum von Weltrang. Aber es ist ein Produkt der britischen Kolonialgeschichte. Das gilt für viele andere große Museen ebenso. Das Humboldt-Forum ist genau dies nicht. Ihm ist eine solche Last nicht aufgebürdet. Diese Freiheit sollten wir nutzen.

Damals entstand das wissenschaftliche Fundament des Ethnologischen Museums in Berlin, und es entstand auf legale Weise. Die Berliner Museen sind deshalb rechtmäßige Besitzer ihrer Bestände.
